Casella Gravimetric Adaptors - for the Microdust pro particulate monitor

• Total suspended particulate (TSP)
• sometimes called the gravimetric adaptor
• this adaptor is used to measure all the particulate suspended in the air
• a cassette and filter can be used to collect a simultaneous sample
• no size selection is carried out in this method
• an external sampling pump (such as Apex std) is required to pull the air through the probe and the adaptor
• adaptor is used with the probe in the horizontal mode and the tube pointing downwards

• Respirable adaptor
• this adaptor incorporates a cyclone size selective system to limit the particle size that is measured
• only particles defined as "respirable range" of 4 micron and less are collected when the flow rate is set at 2.2 l/min
• particles can be collected in a 25 or 37 mm cassette
• an external sampling pump (such as Apex std) is required to pull the air through the probe and the adaptor

• Size selective adaptor
• the size selective sampling adaptor uses polyurethane foam filters (PUF) to limit the size passed through the system
• PUF filters for 10, 4 and 2.5 microns are included in the kit
• tweezers should be used to handle the PUF filters to prevent errors
• flow rate used with the external pump should be at 3.5 l/min
• particles can be collected in a 25 or 37 mm cassette
• an external sampling pump (such as Apex std) is required to pull the air through the probe and the adaptor

• Aspirated adaptor
• this adaptor has no size selection capabilities
• all the total particulate sizes are drawn through the adaptor
• it does not need an external pump since it has its own means of drawing the air through using a small motor to power a fan
• the motor is driven from an external mains power supply at 110 Vac to provide a 5 Vdc voltage
• alternatively this may be provided from a suitable small dc battery pack
• the aspirator unit should be cleaned periodically to prevent the buildup of dust

• Laboratory adaptor
• this adaptor can be used in long term process control application where the particulate concentration must be monitored continuously
• no size selection is provided
• an active system must be used to draw the air sample through the adaptor
• can be used for studies of toxicology, smoke, air filter efficiency, etc.

• PUF filters
• this adaptor is based on the conical inhalable sampler design identified in the UK H&SE publication MDHS14
• consists of polyurethane foam filters with different porosity and size
• enable the different fractions to be separated out to get simultaneous measurements of two concentrations at a time
• can be used to obtain the PM10 and PM2.5 fractions when used for environmental surveys
• can be used with 4 micron filters for respirable measurements
• can be used with the Microdust pro for outdoor measurements
• tweezers should be used to handle the PUF filters to prevent errors
• keep the PUF filters in a clean dust free environment

• DryCal/Defender 500 Series
• use this accessory as a primary source of calibration to check the flow rate selected in the adaptor and pump
• wide range of flow rates available for low flow and normal ranges
• 50 mL/ m to 5Ll/m flow rate range
• clean operation no bubbles or water used
• very convenient and easy to use
• quickly calibrate the flow and make adjustments to the pump if necessary

• Rotameter
• this accessory is used to calibrate the flow rate of the pump used with the adaptor and pump
• read the flow rate from the float in the vertical tube
• the rotameter is a lightweight device, self powered and easy to use
• at the end of the calibration simply dismantle and store for next use
• can be used easily and quickly in the field even by inexperienced users
• should be used to check the flow rate of the pump before (and after) every measurement run to ensure the pump flow has not drifted
