* Some users of newer computers with Windows XP installed since the end of 2002 may find that the video CODECs originally supplied with earlier versions of Windows are not now included as standard. In this case you will need to visit this site (get video codecs) to download the necessary drivers for your pc.

Fitting the batteries
  • Turn the sound level meter upside down on a table.
  • Lift the battery cover off from the back panel.
  • Fit 8 x AA cells into the compartment in the back of the case.
  • Make sure that the batteries are installed the correct way round.
  • Fit the battery cover back over the body until it clicks back into place.
  • Press the On/Off switch and wait for about 10 seconds.
  • Battery icon in top line at the left should show full.
  • If not, replace all the batteries with new ones.

Switching on
  • Connect the microphone and preamp to the socket in the nose of the meter body.
  • Fit a good battery pack as described above.
  • Press the ON/OFF switch in the top left corner of keypad.
  • The startup screen will be displayed for about 10 seconds.
  • The startup routine will finish at the configuration screen.
  • Press the USE MODE key to go to the last used measurement screen.
  • The instrument will show the STATUS screen with the last used bandwidth settings.
  • Press the REAL TIME key to view the standby screen.
  • The display will show the currently set measurement conditions.

Calibrating the instrument
  • Switch On the instrument and allow it to reach the configuration screen.
  • Fit the calibrator over the microphone and switch it on.
  • Press the CAL key to go to the calibration screen.
  • Press the CAL key to confirm a new calibration.
  • The current sound level is displayed on the top line of the display.
  • Use LEVEL UP and LEVEL DOWN keys to adjust level.
  • Adjust to show 114.0 dB for a type 1 & 2 meters.
  • Press SAVE CAL key to set the calibration level in the instrument.
  • The instrument will return to the STATUS screen.
  • Remove microphone from calibrator and switch it off.

Making a broadband measurement
  • Switch on and wait for the configuration screen to be displayed.
  • Press the APPLICATION key to go to the Select Application screen.
  • Use the UP or DOWN arrow keys to highlight the required option.
  • Select the Sound Analyzer option and press the LOAD key.
  • Select the Sound Level Meter option and press the LOAD key.
  • Select the Broadband option and press the LOAD key.
  • Press the REAL TIME key to go to the standby screen.
  • Use the RANGE UP or RANGE DOWN keys to select the measurement range.
  • Choose the range so that the noise level is about 2/3 up the scale.
  • Press the RUN key to start the measurement.
  • Press the RESET key to zero a new recording.
  • Press the RECORD key to save snapshots of the noise.
  • Press the STOP key to halt the measurement and return to the standby screen.
  • Calculated values are only displayed and stored in the start run mode.

Making an octave band measurement
  • Switch on and wait for the configuration screen to be displayed.
  • Press the APPLICATION key to go to the Select Application screen.
  • Use the UP or DOWN arrow keys to highlight the required option.
  • Select the Sound Analyzer option and press the LOAD key.
  • Select the Sound Level Meter option and press the LOAD key.
  • Select the Octave Band option and press the LOAD key.
  • Press the REAL TIME key to go to the standby screen.
  • Use the RANGE UP or RANGE DOWN keys to select the measurement range.
  • Choose the range so that the noise level is about 2/3 up the scale.
  • Press the RUN key to start the measurement.
  • Press the RESET key to zero a new recording.
  • Press the RECORD key to save snapshots of the noise.
  • Press the STOP key to halt the measurement and return to the standby screen.
  • Calculated values are only displayed and stored in the start run mode.

Recalling stored results to the display
  • Switch on and wait for the configuration screen to be displayed.
  • Press the USE MODE key to go to the status screen.
  • Press the RECALL key to show a directory of completed runs.
  • Use the UP or DOWN arrow keys to highlight the required run.
  • When the required start date and time is displayed press the OUTSIDE RIGHT arrow key.
  • The header information screen for the selected run is displayed.
  • Press the OUTSIDE RIGHT arrow key to display the first page of the overall results.
  • Press the OUTSIDE RIGHT arrow key to display the second and subsequent pages of the overall run.
  • Press the OUTSIDE RIGHT arrow key to display the first page of the period data if the unit is a CEL-573 or 593.
  • Press the OUTSIDE RIGHT arrow key to display the second and subsequent pages of the period data if the unit is a CEL-573 or 593.
  • Press the UP or DOWN arrows to cycle round the previous or next period data values if present.

Downloading results to a personal computer
  • Fit the CEL-502 interface to the instrument before switch on.
  • Switch on and wait for the configuration screen to be displayed.
  • Connect the C6621 cable from the instrument to the 9 way RS232 serial port on the computer.
  • Start a copy of CEL PC download software (dB1).
  • Select Instrument|Download from CEL-553/573/593 option in menu.
  • When download dialog box appears highlight run(s) to be saved.
  • Press the Target file button and select a valid path for data storage.
  • Type in a file name for the run(s) and click OK.
  • Click on Download button to transfer run data to PC.

Output to a printer
  • Fit the CEL-501 interface to the instrument before switch on.
  • Switch on and wait for the configuration screen to be displayed.
  • Connect the C6620 cable to the instrument and then to the printer.
  • Load the printer with paper and make sure that it is online.
  • Press the USE MODE button to display the status screen.
  • Press the RECALL key to show the list of stored runs.
  • Press the UP or DOWN arrow keys to display the required run.
  • Press the OUTSIDE RIGHT arrow key to show the header screen.
  • Press the OUTSIDE RIGHT arrow key to show the data screens.
  • Press the PRINT key to cause an screen dump to be sent to the printer.
  • Press the PRINT key for each screen that needs to be printed.
